Lots of skaters have asked how the Carolina Century compares with Athens to Atlanta in terms of distance and elevation. It's hard to say but my impression has been that:

Here are two graphics I made to compare the 2008 route and the 2009 route for the Athens to Atlanta (A2A) Roadskate, for anyone who is curious. I imagine a very few people will be intensely curious. The first graphic shows the changes in elevation profile and distance for 2008 and the 2009 detour. It takes a little over 5 seconds to switch from 2008 to 2009 and then it should repeat to infinity and beyond.

Hi. Here's a noisy but perhaps useful video of the detour around the problems on Cruse Road. You definitely don't want to go there! The first turn is a right onto Old Norcross Rd in or just after a Construction Zone on Herrington. At the end of the video, you'll be set to turn right onto Pleasant Hill Rd., opposite where you would have come in from Cruse Rd.

If you need to get from Atlanta to Athens or vice versa, Southeastern Stages can get you there. They're bookable directly or by way of Greyhound. If you know of more buses between Athens and Atlanta (such as from the Atlanta airport to the Athens bus station, please feel free to add them here.

For those skating Athens to Atlanta, there are buses available on a2a.net and these are your best bet and a good value as I recall. However, if those don't work for you, perhaps these will.

There's so much to say about Athens to Atlanta, but suffice it to say some of us are totally crazy about this event. We've participated since 1999, including the unofficial versions in 2005.

OK, this will be my first A2A, my first road race, period. Pretend I just flew in from Venus or something, y'all, and be patient. My fitness is high, got my new speed skates and am busy building ankle calluses after years of high-boot inlines.A few questions -

1. Apparently, you can send your own food/snacks ahead to various rest checkpoints. How does this work? Did I mention this was my first race?

I finally got around to asking the thirstydog himself, Bob "Bobarazzi" Ryan if I could upload his pastel of one of my photos (see the bottom of the article for the pastel). He explained that it is one of his favorite spots but not one where he usually has his camera out (I agree and until this year with a smaller camera, I think it was the same for me). Bob said...

Our 9th official skating of the 87-mile Athens to Atlanta Roadskate (not including two unofficial traverses in 2005) was on a warm and sunny day one might have expected a month or so earlier. I knew I'd be feeling the muscle cramps in my quads eventually but that didn't stop me from being overly excited at some points early on.

Meet us at the Statue of Athena in front of the Classic Center (on Thomas between Washington and Clayton) in Athens GA for a quick photo of those who are part of InlineNC Yahoogroups.com group and Roadskater.net website or charity inline skating and bicycling team. Would anybody know about skate shops in Atlanta or Athens? I have set some time aside for shopping and visiting. I will rent a car on Thursday Oct. 2^nd to check out the country side. Anything interesting besides the A2A course that I should put on my “Must See List”?  

Does anybody have the total ascent or elevation gain for the 87 mile Athens-to-Atlanta (A2A) course kicking around somewhere in their GPS or training files? I have googled all sorts of term combos, as well as searched this site. Blake's A2A mapmyride entry shows highest & lowest elevation but doesn't add it up for me :-). I'm feeling a bit fuzzy headed today so it's entirely possible I overlooked it, but please post that figure if you have it!

Some stories take a while to be told...or to be tolerably painfully embarrassing to tell. This may not be the last photo from Athens to Atlanta 2007, but it's about the last one I could call an A2A pic for 2007.

We had a challenging weekend of it with the car break-in and window replacement, but after A2A was over, we had a nice few days and just kept putting off going to Athens for my car. I can't tell you why it never dawned on us that there would be a price, beyond just a daily parking fee, for this. There's a sign but it's not one I had read.

I have been wanting to share this graph of Athens to Atlanta 2007 with everyone for some time now. In fact, I intended it to be the first graphic uploaded in the beta photos system, but the Specialized helmet won out. Maybe later I'll delete that one!

 

Deciding to do A2A was a very last minute decision. I kept hitting the website, read numerous stories and had a lot of friends tell me how hard it was! The more everyone told me how difficult it was, the more I wanted to do it.

 

Oh. Buzz buzz buzz buzz, 4:30 a.m. came so quickly after taking so long to arrive.

We got our jolt of hot water and I pondered whether to do some coffee or not. I think I decided not to, and that it would perhaps upset my stomach.

It was also interesting to see a different version of the elevation profile. Check it out! After the Athens to Atlanta skate this year, the Herbsts, a couple who skated the 52 mile distance wanted to know more about the granddad-grandson team who skated the full 87 mile distance.  Here's what I wrote.  My wife and daughter-in-law took pictures at the rest stops and at the finish.   I've included those also.

This book is for adding your story to this 2007 chapter of the Athens to Atlanta History Project. Add it yourself using the Outline tab while editing to select "2007 A2A Journals" as the parent of your article, or don't worry about it and I'll gather it all up later. A2A2007

 

Duane and I signed up for the 38 mile event toward end of the season. We had fond memory of the smooth pavement, chain-towing puppy, missing road, and gator back from our 2003 Texas Flyer team skate. I had vague recollection of the last 49 miles: insufficient hills, rough pavement, and a lot of traffic-basically things I can find in north Texas.
