Part of a series of excellent free skrides (bike rides where skilled inline skaters are welcome) put on by the NC Central Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. The rides are well-supported, marked, and free to all, including those who may not end up participating in the annual Tour to Tanglewood for MS (but you will love the training rides so much you'll be more likely to do the tour after trying most training rides). These rides are for beginners who've trained a little and everyone else on up to experts. SAG and rest stop and bike support team are great.

Tour to Tanglewood for MS 2009 Free Bike Training Rides & Inline Skates Scheduled

These are the best free skrides and some of the best skrides in North Carolina, especially if you are on your way to getting into shape for the fall season of longer distances and weekend tours, like the awesome Tour to Tanglewood for MS. The support from the veteran rest stop heroes, Valerie and Elaine, is a good start to any ride. When the bike shops pitch in (some more than others) it can make it an incredible day out on the road with the bikes.

Paul's Cycling & Fitness is hit or miss, I guess I'd say, over the years, when it comes to Tour to Tanglewood Training Rides. I have to say it has mostly been a good experience, but with some exceptions that make it hard to get out of bed and go there for the training ride. A few years back, the route was so disappointing we quit early and drove back to Greensboro Country Park to skate. Usually it has just been one or two signs that they don't see this as the same opportunity that some shops seem to.

Paul's Bicycles Winston-Salem T2T Training Ride

Paul's Bicycles training ride began on a beautiful summer's day with temps in the low 80s and a moderately sized group starting the 25, 36, and 50 mile loops. There were 6 skaters, who in the end splintered into individuals or pairs. Each, guided by their partner or own internal drive. The course, in my opinion, was the most demanding in terms of road surfaces which at times were very rough with some great climbs thrown in for good measure. A solo downhill at 39.0 mph prompted a whoop as the thrill of the day.

We had a great time at the Paceline Bicycles Winston-Salem Tour to Tanglewood training bike ride and inline skate. New skate friends came out and veterans of the tour we hadn't seen in awhile joined for a nice day of sun and sweat. Here are links to the photos and thumbnail route map for Google Earth:

Here's the speed map from the Paceline skride (skatey bike ride) a few weeks ago. Looks like 37 mph is the best we got out of it. As we get some more mass willing to tuck and fly, we should get up over 40 now and then. Still, way fun!

Paul's had a shaky ride or two, but the last one I went to was great fun on great roads. Near the shop it's a bit busy, as with most bike shops (that's why they put 'em there!), but once out to the open roads I recall some sweet rolls and nice views. I'm glad Paul's paid attention to feedback and improved their route some years back. Thanks!

Paceline Bicycles in Winston-Salem puts on a nice ride and they're definitely friendly folk. It's a bit citified at the start but quickly nice country roads. Coming back you may need your braking skills or good timing, but it's all good and not far to the shop from there.

T2T training rides welcome experienced roadskaters to join in, but if it's your first one, please talk with the MS Society staff, a Bike Response Team member (look for their jerseys!), or a Roadskater.net skater if you can before rolling out. Bikes are welcome too of course!

Ken's Ride has some great roads and beautiful views, plus some mild suburb traffic, and two or three technical challenges for skaters of the downhill sort. If you have a brake or nice wheel burning budget, it's a nice, hilly day out.

2008 Tour To Tanglewood for Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Training Bike Ride Inline Skate Dates

The training rides for "Tour to Tanglewood" are about to begin in a couple of weeks. These rides are all well supported, generous rest-stops, sag wagons, and of course great people. It is a good way to hone your skating or biking skills depending on your particular preference, and you are supporting a great cause and helping people who can't skate/ride like we can.

Below is a list of upcoming rides from the National MS Societies web site listing the events. Mark you calenders and come out and meet some wonderful people in our community.

This is a quick first hack at getting some 2007 photo links over to the new Roadskater.net from RSN Classic (rsn1.net). There will be much more later, and I won't even go into it all now. It's been "in the works" (meaning in my brain) for almost two years now. I don't want to do it until I can do it "right," and the way I want it to look.

We had a nice dry day and homegrownmatt showed up briefly to say hi-bye before streaking off on his knobbies to chase down some roadies. It was great to see him, and even better to have some Mexican food later on with him at the best Mexibuffet I have ever seen at Cuco's in King, NC. The next time you're up on US-52 looking for some great tasting food, check it out.

Paceline Winston-Salem hosted another great Tour to Tanglewood Training Ride this year, and while I was late, my skatepals, Craig and Andrew, were kind enough to wait. Once we got started, they were still waiting some, as I think I blew my adrenaline just getting there! We had some great roads with moderate hills and some medium gatorback on one section, which also had leaves and limbs from a storm the night before it seems. It was great to have a three-pack of skaters and nice that Craig and Andy got to meet. Check out my photos here:

Some years this ride has not been a great ride, but I think they got the message and last year was fun even with last minute route changes. Come out for a free skate ride with the Tour to Tanglewood riders. Get to know the core group of MS Society volunteers and riders. Free, with great rest stop support! Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. and rollout is usually 8:30 a.m, but be there a bit early in case they're eager to start.

It's nice to see the honors still coming for local skater guy Joey Cheek, and that his good works continue. Looks like this award was received on June 4 in Tulsa, OK, and was presented by the Rotary Club of Tulsa in memory of the legendary Oklahoma State basketball coach Henry P. Iba.

Not sure of the details yet, but Ken's is always a nice ride. It has a couple of tricky spots for skaters, with a downhill into a busy road on the way back, and a long downhill with a sweeping right into a stop sign on the optional repeat loop.

Blake and I will be taking part in the last T2T training ride of the year, this Saturday a.m. (9.2.06). Come out and join us!! The probability of precipitation is only 1% until 11am, even if this has been the year of 'show up even if it's raining right now!' (remember the Tour de Lions).

Ken's Bike Shop T2T Training Ride Preview Notes

roadskater's picture
Submitted by roadskater on July 5, 2006 - 3:43pm.

here are some notes on the ken's training ride as experienced in years from 2001 to last year. we're not sure about this year's route because ken's bike shop has moved, so if anyone finds out, please reply here and on InlineNC if you will.

ken's ride has always (for me) started in reynolda village in winston salem. the route went through a trail into wake forest university. this was beautiful unless wet, then slick especially for those of me that don't pay enough attention always. then it was a right uphill and over down moderately left turn through houses of professors and such, then up through part of the campus by waite chapel, right past soccer fields, right out of the uni and briefly onto a moderately busy road quickly onto 2-lane roads.
