The date for the next SkateStrong workshop has been decided, and it is: Saturday, March 28th. Information on workshop can be found at: http://www.skatestrong.com/
For those that don't know, the workshop is a fundraiser for Multiple Sclerosis Society -- 100% of the money goes to MS Society. It's for all levels, beginner to advanced. The content will vary a bit depending on who actually attends.

Skaters and cyclists and others who participate in active transportation (walkers, runners, skateboarders, more) please come out to the open board meeting of the North Carolina Active Transportation Alliance on January 11 in Raleigh. As we transition into a new federal administration, it's an important time to make your voice heard in support of projects that favor more and safer alternatives to the automobile...especially human-powered alternatives.

Hi everyone!
I am teaching the next SkateStrong workshop on Saturday, July 19th, 2008. Normally, I'd point everyone to the website for details, but the power supply on my webserver (which was just replaced 4 months ago) has died again! So, rather than wait for the replacement to be shipped to me, I thought I should get the word out now so that people can plan accordingly.

Hi everyone! Due to the multitude of schedule conflicts around the
original date for my workshop, it ended up not happening. So... I
want to gauge the interest of all the skaters out there and see if
there are enough people that would attend a workshop, should I decide
to put one together.
Heating homes with used french-fry oil may get a much-needed boost in North Carolina from spiking crude oil prices.
Bioheat, a blend of traditional home heating oil with vegetable or animal oil additives, has gained acceptance in recent years in New England, where most residents use oil to heat their homes. But the biofuel blend is still an obscure alternative home heating source in this state, where only 8 percent of households use heating oil in the winter.

I'd like to start getting an idea of how many people will be taking my next workshop. It will be held on Saturday, August 18th. The location will most likely be the same as last time -- Reedy Creek Elementary School. The feedback from the first one was pretty good. I'd encourage anyone that attended the first one to post their thoughts so that others might sign up...
The Triangle Skating community (and beyond) have been invited to participate in the OCS Bicycle Time Trial Series http://www.fsseries.com/time_trial_osc_bicycle.html The course will be at the Orange County Speedway (OCS) located in Rougemont, NC about 20 minutes north of Durham off 501. The course length will be 8 miles or 24 laps (but we have the option of doing a shorter distance). The track is .375 mile paved oval with 16 degree banking on the straight aways and 19 degree banking on the corners. The track is also 50 feet wide and with low banking will allow riders to ride anywhere on the track.

Signups for the inline skating (rollerblading, speedskating) workshop have been pretty light, so I have a special deal for anyone that might be "on the fence"...
Email me by Tuesday, March 20, to reserve your place in the workshop. You do not need to make a donation before the inline skating workshop. Attend the workshop on March 24th in Raleigh, NC. If, after the workshop, you do not feel like it was worth your time, do not feel obligated to donate anything. If, however, you do feel like the workshop was worthwhile, then please make a donation my MS Society Tour to Tanglewood fundraising effort.

I've been cooking this up for a little while now and want to make the announcement even though the website isn't quite polished yet....
I will be teaching a skating workshop in Raleigh, NC the weekend of March 24, 2007. This workshop is targetting beginner speedskaters and recreational/fitness skaters. The workshop is part of my fundraising for Tour to Tanglewood, which benefits Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Raleigh recently was hit by a storm that did some damage to some of the trails which have been discussed on InlineNC and TSC, but I was lucky enough to skate the Capital Area Greenway before that.

OK well I'd better just say hey northinsouth we love you but we're glad you're not too happy today! This is because North Carolina just won its first professional sports championship (unless you consider getting a free college education makes you a professional, as I do). [That's North Carolina, or Carolina as a unit, including that other part split off long ago so we couldn't have too much of the best mountains, piedmont and beaches.] Of course, it would be more interesting if the players had to be from the area with the name of the team, but that's not the way most pro or university sports work, eh y'all?
Which do you think works best as the single publicized name for the alliance website? The North Carolina Active Transportation Alliance website is in the planning stages. This page lets you vote on domain names and comment on features you might like on the site in advance. Results are tallied by Borda Count, sometimes called "a consensus-based electoral system" where each choice gets a point for every choice ranked below it. Thus, with 9 choices, a 1st place vote gets 8 points. Please click the title for more info and to rank....
Note that if you only vote on the names you really like and leave the rest unranked, you boost those names you prefer, as with no rank at all a name gets no points. The idea is to find the name most wish to promote, and let the rest fall away. Thus, this is a reasonable practice, especially if all are aware of the technique noted here.
You may cancel and revote.
Please vote only once. Although it is possible to game the system by voting anonymously from various IP addresses, we hope you'll vote just once. The way to ensure one vote per person is to require login, but that would also ensure a lower vote participation and one biased toward people willing to sign up for a website in general, and specifically a webiste about skating and cycling for charity.
