Double Yes! Shani Davis USA Second World Record in 24 Hours (1000m), Marsicano Second Again

roadskater's picture
Submitted by roadskater on March 8, 2009 - 1:33am.

Yay! I can't wait to see some of this racing. Things are looking good for next year's Olympics! This is from a good piece worth a look below...

Speedskater Trevor Marsicano had never skated especially fast in the 1,000 meters, by international racing standards. His best time ranked only modestly inside the top 100 of all-time.

final meet of the World Cup season, aiming to secure season titles --
Davis leads the circuit at both 1,000 and 1,500 meters -- and enjoy a

in Vancouver as well as the upcoming Olympic year.  [sltrib.com]

Watch Hours of Free Internet TV Speed Skating (Long Track and Short) On Demand and Live with Highlights and Recaps

Oh I am so sorry I didn't look this up before, even when I saw press releases earlier this year. I just never quite got to it until now. But now is good too. If you wish you could see long track and short track ISU world cup events on your television, well you might sometimes, but on your computer, you can see many hours of video from this year's world cup season in both track formats. I've only watched a bit but it looks and sounds and feels great!

The ISU World Junior Speedskating Championships took place in Zakopane, Poland last weekend. Wow. This event like it would be amazing fun for participants. I'm not sure about spectators if they didn't like the cold. But look how beautiful it was there! Well a bit snowy some of the time for skating maybe? Who cares!

The event has a nice website with some good photos. If you have a minute to watch the video...do it.

Shani Davis continues his winning ways and certainly is close to taking a season win as well. No time to go into this now, but he's really doing great. Also Kristina Groves of Ottawa seems to be doing well lately. Not sure on the timeliness of these as they reference different locations. Gotta go! Enjoy...

Champion Inline Speed Skater's Dad Gets Six for Juicing Son

Who knows how many inline skate races have been won by dopers! If you wanted to juice, certainly outdoor inline would be a good place to go, eh? It looks like USA Roller Sports (USARS) banned the skater, Corey Gahan, (some time ago) and his father, 41 years old, "is believed to be the first person convicted of providing illegal performance-enhancing drugs to an athlete." He apparently gave his 14-year-old (or younger) son steroids and human growth hormone.

Deciding to do A2A was a very last minute decision. I kept hitting the website, read numerous stories and had a lot of friends tell me how hard it was! The more everyone told me how difficult it was, the more I wanted to do it.

Here's a map for the Athens to Atlanta Roadskate A2A 2007. While writing my 2007 A2A review, I just couldn't resist looking at a few things in satellite and hybrid views. It was also interesting to see a different version of the elevation profile. Check it out! Make sure to view the map in mapmyride, as you'll have more options, such as hybrid view and elevation map view. Hope you love it! Skateylove, roadskater.

This book is for adding your story to this 2007 chapter of the Athens to Atlanta History Project. Add it yourself using the Outline tab while editing to select "2007 A2A Journals" as the parent of your article, or don't worry about it and I'll gather it all up later. If your story is for another year which does not exist yet in our book, please contact me or leave it be and I will add a chapter for that year. Please add your stories from previous years as well. Skateylove and thanks. We hope you enjoy our Athens to Atlanta Roadskate stories!

Athens to Atlanta Roadskate A2A 2007 Inline Skate Video

Submitted by roadskater on October 11, 2007 - 12:08pm.

Here's my video from Athens to Atlanta 2007. For best results you may want to turn the sound off and go make some coffee, or pause the video while it loads for awhile. Once it has played to the end, subsequent plays should be glitch-free. I'd like to hear what system (win/lin/mac) and browser (ie/ff/op/saf/etc.) you are using and whether it worked for you. I hope you like it enough to leave a comment!

London England UK Mayor Wants Tour de France to Return Soon

roadskater's picture
Submitted by roadskater on July 31, 2007 - 2:12pm.

Good vibes all around from London, England and the UK from hosting the Tour de France, or so it seems. I thought it was interesting and fun, and especially since the weather was so great for those days. The English really came out to look and seemed to be enthusiastic. I'm glad they're not piling on as there are enough piles to go around already. Mo' bettah testin' throughout the ranks I say and careful living for the riders it seems. It's a job many of us would gladly take!

In addition to bringing the world the awesome http://speedskateworld.com website, Peter Doucet is busy representing Canada and inline skating at the Pan Am Games in Brazil. Peter placed 9th overall in the combined, 11th in the 20K elimination race and 9th in the 10K points race. Congratulations, Peter. That box of wheels must have come in handy! Jennifer Rodriguez Switches from Speedskating to Track Pursuit Cycling

Here's a very interesting article by Sharon Robb on Olympic speedskater Jennifer Rodriguez and her switch to competitive cycling, her effort to reach the Olympic level in a the sport, and more. It mentions the Brian Piccolo velodrome where skaters and cyclists work out together on separate tracks. It is a great facility. For a brief movie of the place see my minimovie at:

Imagine Winning World Championships in Speedskating and Cycling in the Same Year...Twice

I sometimes imagine winning my age group in a small enough race where there might be one or two others in my group. Ha! Imagine winning the world championships in speedskating. Then imagine that same year taking the world championships in cycling! Thirty years ago, that's what Sheila Young did. Check out the great form and how close she sets down to the snow-marked lane edge in the photo attached to the story below...

Tyler Hamilton wins Mount Washington bike race

It looks like Tyler Hamilton is back in form at least partially, set to have done his time two days before the World Championships. He won a tough 7.6 miler at Mt. Washington, which I guess doesn't prove much, but is better than not winning my age group even in tiddlywinks.

Saskatoon athlete breaks world record

Submitted by roadskater on July 11, 2006 - 3:30pm.

I don't know much about world record solo attempts, but I saw this story in the sidebar and thought it might spark some discussion at some point among those who have been to the F1 track in Montreal, especially to skate. As I recall from reports, during the 24 hour skate race there, participants had to watch for hedgehogs crossing or some such! Regardless, I don't know if this is an age group or gender or human speed record, as the article leaves a bit to the imagination. Perhaps we'll find more later. Enjoy...Blake

Tour de France 2006

Here's a quick note to start us out on TdF. What a sad state sports are in, and what an awful deal for the innocent, if there are any, and I'm sure there are. I think the tdf will still be great without the top five from last year, and I have not much worry over cheaters getting punished, but there was no way to have due process in this case it seems. I don't know if it's better to let the riders ride then strip them of their prize if found guilty, or to do as the teams agreed, remove anyone under investigation. Seems that Vino got an especially bad deal, if he hasn't been doing anything, as he's not even charged but lost enough team members to not have a team, as I understand it.

Support our 2006 FIRS Speed World Championships Athletes!

 Friends,

As you might know, our own Ashley Mann from Asheboro, NC has made the marathon squad in the US World Team and is competing in the 2006 FIRS Speed World Championships in Korea. Many of you may know Ashley from the Tour to Tanglewood 2005 where she demonstrated her true spirit by helping fellow skaters finishing the course and demonstrated her strong skating by sticking with the lead pack.

You might also know that USARS does not cover all of the world team skaters' expenses, expecting that team members raise the money or pay from their own pocket. For this reason, the Ultimate Speed Skating team has created a donation page that allows you to support Ashley in her quest for victory in the 2006 Champtionships. You can access the page here: http://www.ultimatespeedskating.com. Please know that any donation will make a huge difference!!!

Also, you can help Ashley by buying Ashley's trading cards and the 2007 Skating calendar here: http://www.sendthebest.org/tradingcards%202006%20World%20Team.html
