We had a super time at the Bicycle Toy & Hobby Sales Tour to Tanglewood training ride inline skate. This year there was an improved long route of 43 miles. There was some additional gatorback to do on roads familiar from previous Tours, but after this, the rest of the day was on supersweet asphalt, with some challenging uphills and fun and safe downhills too. When we got back to the shop there was so much food we really didn't need to have lunch (though later on we went to Sir Pizza for small versions of their awesome pies).

Tour de Kale

It's this coming weekend: June 20th 2009. Distance options: 25K, 60K, 110K, & 125K.

I probably can't make it to this event, but it looks great. If you plan on skating you might double check for permission, but the people involved have always supported our being part of their events. I may go to the kick-off party and registration to find out more and perhaps to see if they need some help. Not sure. For those who don't know we had 8 skaters (4 from Georgia, 4 from NC) and 57 cyclists at the inaugural Roadskater.net Carolina Century (carolinacentury.com), which raised $1025 after expenses. The proceeds will be donated in the names of the volunteers to the MS society (or at their option to select charity cycling events that benefit individuals with sudden catastrophic challenges in their lives).

Tammy Wilson was a young Mother and hardworking Guilford County paramedic who passed away from cancer in 2006. The Tour de Tammy bike ride fundraiser was set up to help support Tammy's children, as well as other children of fallen paramedics.

Here's the latest word from the Tour to Tanglewood Bike Ride & Inline Skate. We're on, provisionally, for Saturday, and it is very likely there will at least be a Sunday ride & skate. Again, while I'm not a wxpert, I believe Saturday will be a go as well. But it's not up to me, thank goodness! Here's the word from Derrick Huff:

Come out and skate or cycle up to 100 miles with us on September 6th & 7th 2008 to benefit those suffering from the devastating effects of Multiple Sclerosis. After Saturday's skate/ride from Volvo Trucks North America in Greensboro to Tanglewood Park in Clemmons, hang out and mingle with other event participants: eat, drink and be proud of yourself for skating that far. Camp out at the campsite or in a nearby hotel room for much-deserved sleep, wake up next day and give your body another great workout skating (or cycling) back to Greensboro for lunch!

Wow this is some great news. The much-respected Tour de Moore has invited us to join them for the Sandhills Cycling Club's main event hits the road Labor Day. I sent an inquiry earlier this week to Rainbow Cycles and received this reply:

Yes we’d love to have road skaters at our event.  It looks like it will be a perfect day in the 80’s with some clouds.  You can register at active.com or print our registration form from our website sandhillscyclingclub.org.  How many skaters will you bring?

Paul's Cycling & Fitness is hit or miss, I guess I'd say, over the years, when it comes to Tour to Tanglewood Training Rides. I have to say it has mostly been a good experience, but with some exceptions that make it hard to get out of bed and go there for the training ride. A few years back, the route was so disappointing we quit early and drove back to Greensboro Country Park to skate. Usually it has just been one or two signs that they don't see this as the same opportunity that some shops seem to.

We had a great time at the Paceline Bicycles Winston-Salem Tour to Tanglewood training bike ride and inline skate. New skate friends came out and veterans of the tour we hadn't seen in awhile joined for a nice day of sun and sweat. Here are links to the photos and thumbnail route map for Google Earth:

We love that Tour de Kale! Sorry so long getting anything from my data and photos, but working for money is a bummer even when it's for really worthwhile causes. Here's the speed map from TdK, and we almost cracked 40 mph with just eebee and myself together at the time. MikeB was there and Northinsouth had daughter NorthinsouthJr there riding the bike and trailer, respectively. Beyond that I'll have to look back at my photos, but I remember meeting the guy that owned the whole place (Denton Farm Park) and he said he "worked there" in typical marvelous understatement! Now that's good people! It was great to see Kale and the rest of the family and friends so close to him, and to be so incredibly welcome just because we were on skates! We missed our skatepals and couldn't keep up with the Northinsouth crew or MikeB, but we had an awesome hot skate in the country day...and by the time we saw MikeB again we were really getting overheated but enjoying the sweat and toil of the road.

Here's the speed map from the Tour to Tanglewood Training Ride at the Clemmons Bicycle Shop. We made it up to almost 38 mph at our best but that was solo coming back down Dock Davis the the creek at the railway tracks where the bridge was replaced a couple of years ago. With four together we would have definitely cracked 40, probably 42 or 43. It was a blast and I got some of it on video but it's really no substitute. Clemmons is a great route on some of the Tour roads, sometimes in the opposite direction, sometimes in the same direction, sometimes day one, others, day two. It's good stuff!

Here's the speed map from the Spinz bike shop training bike ride and skate in High Point, Archdale and Sophia, almost up to Caraway Mountain. We maxed out at 35 or so but some of it felt faster because of the country side, lay of the land, and curve of the roads. There were some stiff climbs and it was a fun day of skatey company even if we weren't all at the same speed all the time. The rain at the end gave eebee a little spark since that's childhood weather for her methinks. Jack, eebee and myself cruised in after the others had departed...I think that was Andrew, Kim and Amy and I hope I'm not missing anyone here...we were not all really together before the start!

Here's the speed map from the Paceline skride (skatey bike ride) a few weeks ago. Looks like 37 mph is the best we got out of it. As we get some more mass willing to tuck and fly, we should get up over 40 now and then. Still, way fun!

I am teaching the next SkateStrong workshop on Saturday, July 19th, 2008. Normally, I'd point everyone to the website for details, but the power supply on my webserver (which was just replaced 4 months ago) has died again! So, rather than wait for the replacement to be shipped to me, I thought I should get the word out now so that people can plan accordingly.

 

Denton Farmpark, Denton, NC is becoming a home away from home for me every June. Hundreds of cyclists and a skater or three met at the park out in the country to honor Kale's superbly supported charity ride last Saturday, June 21st 2008. Let me tell you, the Denton folk know how to mix gatorade at the rest stops! Not a watered-down barrell out there.

Paul's had a shaky ride or two, but the last one I went to was great fun on great roads. Near the shop it's a bit busy, as with most bike shops (that's why they put 'em there!), but once out to the open roads I recall some sweet rolls and nice views. I'm glad Paul's paid attention to feedback and improved their route some years back. Thanks!

Paceline Bicycles in Greensboro hosted a great ride last year with police support for their Battleground Ave location at rollout and even when we returned from a long ride. Great job Greensboro City Police! The Paceline team has been friendly to our team of skaters at the tour and around Country Park, and this skride is another way to enjoy the hills north of the city and share the road with lots of friendly cyclists.

Spinz Bike Shop is a relatively new sponsor but they did a lot last year at various charities, not just the Tour to Tanglewood. I went to their skride last year and met Andy there. We had a good time on some nice roads. Of course any ride starting in a town named High Point ends with some kind of uphill run! We had a great time and they were mighty friendly to us at the shop.

Paceline Bicycles in Winston-Salem puts on a nice ride and they're definitely friendly folk. It's a bit citified at the start but quickly nice country roads. Coming back you may need your braking skills or good timing, but it's all good and not far to the shop from there.

T2T training rides welcome experienced roadskaters to join in, but if it's your first one, please talk with the MS Society staff, a Bike Response Team member (look for their jerseys!), or a Roadskater.net skater if you can before rolling out. Bikes are welcome too of course!
