Here's some info about a surgical procedure performed by an Italian doctor to halt MS. The procedure unblocks restricted bloodflow from the brain in MS patients. 2 years later, 73% of those who had the procedure (65 people) showed no symptoms of MS!!

Obese Women Age 18 to 20 Found to Have Over Twice the Risk of Developing Multiple Sclerosis (MS)

A new study finds interesting information on the time of life that obesity may affect a woman's chance of developing Multiple Sclerosis. In studying data from 200,000 women over 40 years, researchers found that obesity in late adolescence and early adulthood (18 to 20 years old) doubled the chance of developing muliple sclerosis later in life.

...a surprising finding was that the results showed a significant link to
increased MS risk only from obesity during adolescence, but not during
childhood or adulthood.

Multiple Sclerosis News: Early Smoking Bad, Prolonged Breast Feeding Good for Mom to Stave off Relapses

roadskater's picture
Submitted by roadskater on February 22, 2009 - 3:12pm.

A couple of recent reports of preliminary research or small studies are interesting. Much research seems to involve early age factors in developing multiple sclerosis later. In this regard, a study from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine indicates that those who started smoking before age 17 had a higher risk of getting MS...

Multiple Sclerosis Patients' Own Stem Cells Might Reverse Early Stage MS, plus more MS news

I found some Multiple Sclerosis news in the right sidebar worth noting.

First is a finding that researchers in a small study...

...appear to have reversed the neurological dysfunction of early-stage
multiple sclerosis patients by transplanting their own immune stem
cells into their bodies and thereby "resetting" their immune systems.

The party's over. Part of it was canceled by the Hurricane/Tropical Storm Hanna. We still skated and rode and had a great time!

However, while the Tour to Tanglewood for Multiple Sclerosis was delayed and shortened and is now over, for everyone with MS--and everyone who cares for them--the disease goes on.

So we need to keep going. Let's help them. Will you help me help them?

Hi everyone!

I am teaching the next SkateStrong workshop on Saturday, July 19th, 2008. Normally, I'd point everyone to the website for details, but the power supply on my webserver (which was just replaced 4 months ago) has died again! So, rather than wait for the replacement to be shipped to me, I thought I should get the word out now so that people can plan accordingly.

Paul's had a shaky ride or two, but the last one I went to was great fun on great roads. Near the shop it's a bit busy, as with most bike shops (that's why they put 'em there!), but once out to the open roads I recall some sweet rolls and nice views. I'm glad Paul's paid attention to feedback and improved their route some years back. Thanks!

Paceline Bicycles in Greensboro hosted a great ride last year with police support for their Battleground Ave location at rollout and even when we returned from a long ride. Great job Greensboro City Police! The Paceline team has been friendly to our team of skaters at the tour and around Country Park, and this skride is another way to enjoy the hills north of the city and share the road with lots of friendly cyclists.

Spinz Bike Shop is a relatively new sponsor but they did a lot last year at various charities, not just the Tour to Tanglewood. I went to their skride last year and met Andy there. We had a good time on some nice roads. Of course any ride starting in a town named High Point ends with some kind of uphill run! We had a great time and they were mighty friendly to us at the shop.

Paceline Bicycles in Winston-Salem puts on a nice ride and they're definitely friendly folk. It's a bit citified at the start but quickly nice country roads. Coming back you may need your braking skills or good timing, but it's all good and not far to the shop from there.

T2T training rides welcome experienced roadskaters to join in, but if it's your first one, please talk with the MS Society staff, a Bike Response Team member (look for their jerseys!), or a Roadskater.net skater if you can before rolling out. Bikes are welcome too of course!

Cycles de Oro is a constant supporter of inline skaters being part of charity bike rides and much more, and Dale was a co-incorporator of the new NC Active Transportation Alliance, which has welcomed skaters along with walkers, runners, cyclists and others engaged in human-powered transportation. This ride starts in the north part of Greensboro, with one technical part near the start downhill to a T at Latham Park. After that, it's out of the city to the north and back in by familiar roads, then through Sunset Hills back to the shop. Always a nice time with super people.

2008 Tour To Tanglewood for Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Training Bike Ride Inline Skate Dates

andrewinnc's picture
Submitted by andrewinnc on June 8, 2008 - 6:01am.

The training rides for "Tour to Tanglewood" are about to begin in a couple of weeks. These rides are all well supported, generous rest-stops, sag wagons, and of course great people. It is a good way to hone your skating or biking skills depending on your particular preference, and you are supporting a great cause and helping people who can't skate/ride like we can.

Below is a list of upcoming rides from the National MS Societies web site listing the events. Mark you calenders and come out and meet some wonderful people in our community.

The world, the internet, cycling and the art of sharing lost a major force in the form of Sheldon Brown, whose work remains at SheldonBrown.com. He was an incredible resource of cycling knowledge. By all accounts he was also a man of good humor and skateylove (bikeylove) too. Many accounts tell of his helpfulness online, by email, and in person. Timv has mentioned Sheldon often to me in our various discussions, including where I might find out more about my 1980s Centurion bike, learn about fixies, and much more.

Tour to Tanglewood 2007 Bike Skate Photos

roadskater's picture
Submitted by roadskater on September 20, 2007 - 5:12am.

The 2007 Tour to Tanglewood was my ninth, all on skates, all including both days. The Roadskater.net team was 36 members, 18 on skates, from NC, GA, MI, NJ and NJ (born in USA, Canada, Netherlands and UK). We were missing a few regulars because of the North Shore Inline Marathon in Duluth, MN and for other reasons. I hope you like the 420 photos that made it through editing!

Tour to Tanglewood was a blast this year. Full of friends, skating, tornadoes, sun, hills, cookies, purple, wind, missing luggage, canceled flights, and gloriously bad singing.

After the 6 Tour to Tanglewoods I have been fortunate enough to skate in, the whole gathering to me is starting to resemble a huge family of 1,500, and growing every year. Each part of the weekend brings its own joy:

Hi all. Life takes over sometimes, eh? Well with a little less than 3 weeks to go before Tour to Tanglewood 2007 we heard that 1300 riders and skaters are registered already. As for our team, we are up to 24 members with more surely about to sign up. Some of us even have some contributions turned in, and we have two clear leaders in the contest. This includes just items turned in to the website or office already, and is not indicative of donations many have received directly. Still to give some kudos and encouragement, here are the donations we have so far on the website:
