Blake has posted the advice that he offered to someone who asked for help buying her first speed boots, so I guess that I could do likewise:

Easy Voting Inline Skating (Rollerblading) and Cycling (Biking) Polls

Here's a book style collection of several polls that I put together for easy flip-through voting. I hope you enjoy the polls and if you have ideas for more, please use the create/feedback form to send me your thoughts! I'm republishing this so it will show up on the main page, rather than have each poll show up. Each time I add a poll I hope to remember to let you know through this message. The newest polls are:

Tour to Tanglewood Beginner Ride Photos

We had a great time inline skating with the cyclists at the Tour to Tanglewood Beginner's Ride (the 3rd in a series, I think) at Spencer Love Tennis Center in Jaycee Park in Greensboro. We did about 10 miles up to Air Harbor Rd. and Bass Chapel Rd., making our way back on Lawndale, up the hill by the Food Lion (formerly the Winn Dixie) and back via Country Park.

Don't Fear the Sweeper: The Fine Art of No-Drop Rides and Skates

We roadskaters have at times had social skates at Country Park and elsewhere (NYC Central Park in Manhattan, Philly, Miami, DC). These events are great fun but it is always hard for us to find a true sweep who doesn't mind being at the back. In Manhattan, I have fond memories of a man a bit older than even myself who rode his bike quite happily at the back of several hundred skaters. He was always smiling, wearing his Aqueduct tee, with his nice easy way.

Try InlineNC Inline Skating (Rollerblading) Email Group

RSN2 is not for everybody, obviously, and I just wanted to mention that wherever you are in the world, if you prefer the semi-private atmosphere of an email group, you might check out my InlineNC Yahoo! group. We're up to 266 members now, and while the level of posting varies throughout the year, it's almost always about skating (events, equipment, technique, travel, training, charity, more). Members get access to the archive, which is a glorious attic of treasures from our collective past, filled with tips and tricks and tales of woe and inspiration.

Does being a Brave Soldier help road rash?

I was browsing a list of products on the Bike Nashbar website and something called "Brave Soldier First Defense" caught my eye. Blurb says that it was "originally designed to treat road rash at bikes races," and that it "cleanses and removes debris with a powerful, yet soothing antiseptic wash that doesn’t sting."

Here's my report from the 2005 Tour to Tanglewood Awards Ceremony, which I hope will inspire us, now that the skating and cycling for 2006's Tour is done, to look at what we can do from now until our donations are due.

How to Relieve Speed Skate Boot Pain: Speedskates Socks Neoprene Heat Molding

Over on InlineNC there was a question from one of our team members about ankle pain with Powerslide R4 boots. Here are some links in case you're a member of InlineNC. I won't quote from others, but will start a discussion here so it's Googable:

Okay, I can't take credit for discovering this (Ann posted the info to InlineNC), but there is a very cool, FREE, site that allows you to post & view cycling routes.  Registration is quick and painless -- they don't even require an email address...

Support our 2006 FIRS Speed World Championships Athletes!

skart's picture
Submitted by skart on June 29, 2006 - 9:16pm.

 Friends,

As you might know, our own Ashley Mann from Asheboro, NC has made the marathon squad in the US World Team and is competing in the 2006 FIRS Speed World Championships in Korea. Many of you may know Ashley from the Tour to Tanglewood 2005 where she demonstrated her true spirit by helping fellow skaters finishing the course and demonstrated her strong skating by sticking with the lead pack.

You might also know that USARS does not cover all of the world team skaters' expenses, expecting that team members raise the money or pay from their own pocket. For this reason, the Ultimate Speed Skating team has created a donation page that allows you to support Ashley in her quest for victory in the 2006 Champtionships. You can access the page here: http://www.ultimatespeedskating.com. Please know that any donation will make a huge difference!!!

Also, you can help Ashley by buying Ashley's trading cards and the 2007 Skating calendar here: http://www.sendthebest.org/tradingcards%202006%20World%20Team.html

Handbooks for Tour to Tanglewood

roadskater's picture
Submitted by roadskater on June 28, 2006 - 4:14pm.

I've set up some "handbooks" or "books" under view/books that will serve as frameworks for us to get our guides to the Tour to Tanglewood going. One of these handbooks is for out of town visitors mostly, to help them make their way from airport to hotel to Vovlo Trucks N.A. and to know what to expect regarding luggage, camping equipment and other gear. It could also be useful for locals who have not booked hotels before in Clemmons. The book, which starts out mostly empty until we all write it (join the site if you'd like to help write anything on the site) is located here:

Raleigh recently was hit by a storm that did some damage to some of the trails which have been discussed on InlineNC and TSC, but I was lucky enough to skate the Capital Area Greenway before that.

My skate route

Submitted by eebee on June 14, 2006 - 3:05pm.

I'm interested in descriptions of where people skate for their training, i.e. whether road, trail, track, parking lot/deck, hilly (if so, how hilly and how do we compare?), flat, loop distance, or if A-Z and back again, busy or not, hazards, typical weather conditions, etc. I don't own a gps yet so can't give any hill data on my skate places.
