I finally got around to asking the thirstydog himself, Bob "Bobarazzi" Ryan if I could upload his pastel of one of my photos (see the bottom of the article for the pastel). He explained that it is one of his favorite spots but not one where he usually has his camera out (I agree and until this year with a smaller camera, I think it was the same for me). Bob said...

Dutch Win but USA Men Do Well in the ISU World Junior Speedskating Championships in Zakopane Poland. Outdoors! Beautiful! Photos

The ISU World Junior Speedskating Championships took place in Zakopane, Poland last weekend. Wow. This event like it would be amazing fun for participants. I'm not sure about spectators if they didn't like the cold. But look how beautiful it was there! Well a bit snowy some of the time for skating maybe? Who cares!

The event has a nice website with some good photos. If you have a minute to watch the video...do it.

There's a whole lot of skating going on in Harbin (Haerbin) China. I've been following some of the stories and looking at photos this week, without a whole lot to say about it, since I don't know much about these young athletes.

Here's one way to find some good stuff...

What We Need... More Young Skaters Having Fun

roadskater's picture
Submitted by roadskater on February 13, 2009 - 1:44pm.

One of the happy moments of the last week was when I was skating at Country Park and a little girl about of five years or so gleefully exclaiimed to her parents, "Look, Mom, he's ice skating!" I of course interpreted this to mean that I looked like an Olympic Ice Speedskater of awesomeness. (Please don't say there's no way.) I'm convinced kids love inline skating. How can we get them outdoors and skating with us so they can be the future of roadskating? Let's think how and do some of that.

Hi to all. Some of the first photos to show up are the ones by Amy in charge of the 12- and 63-mile Rest Stop, who was ably assisted by many, most notably by her mom, Margaret. Thank you both for making it possible for me to sleep a bit in the days leading up to the RSNCC, knowing Scalesville Fire Station was covered. You helped me feel good enough to skate on the day, too, so thanks! Check out the pics. I took around 700, so it'll be awhile!

Our 9th official skating of the 87-mile Athens to Atlanta Roadskate (not including two unofficial traverses in 2005) was on a warm and sunny day one might have expected a month or so earlier. I knew I'd be feeling the muscle cramps in my quads eventually but that didn't stop me from being overly excited at some points early on.

No biggie. All are welcome. Then we'll go to hear Henry's rant for the 2008 A2A.

Tour to Tanglewood 2008 Sunday Photos: Bike Ride Inline Skate for Multiple Sclerosis

Once the tropical storm/hurricane Hanna had passed on through during what would have been the Saturday morning ride to Tanglewood, the Roadskater.net Team had to decide whether to get in our cars and ride to Tanglewood or hit the roads and burn some calories. We decided to do 48.5 miles on our skates and bikes on a route of supersweet asphalt north of Greensboro.

Bicycle Toy & Hobby Sales gaves us a great skate and ride last weekend, even considering some rough road (not the worst gatorback by far, but not as great as the rest) on the spur out to and around Abbotts Creek. We had nice skaters, 4 veterans of T2T and 5 who have yet to experience the glorious weekend...but most plan to.

The Paceline Bicycles Greensboro Bike Ride and Inline Skate was a fun, if relatively short (around 28 miles or so...I turned my Garmin Forerunner 305 on a bit late), training ride for the Tour to Tanglewood.

The GVC Red, White & Blue was lots of fun despite hot weather and muscle pain. We started out for 41ish miles but missed a turn (no street sign and no cue sheet mileage info) and gleefully wandered along for quite some time before finding anyone to ask about Ironworks Rd. So we ended up doing 51.5, ending up with hot sun. Here's a link to the photos, the speed map of the route, and a google earth photo thumbnails route map...

Geocoding Photos: New Fun for Roadskate Reports

I'm not claiming to be any kind of expert here, but the subject of geocoding photographs caught my attention and it seems like something that could be a really natural fit with what folks here are doing. Maybe the links and things I have to share will be helpful to someone, and (perhaps more likely) maybe someone here is actually doing this already and could explain it further to me.

Athens to Atlanta Roadskate A2A 2007 Inline Skate Report (Sunday)

Oh. Buzz buzz buzz buzz, 4:30 a.m. came so quickly after taking so long to arrive.

We got our jolt of hot water and I pondered whether to do some coffee or not. I think I decided not to, and that it would perhaps upset my stomach.

Grandfather & Grandson Inline Skate 87 Miles Together at Athens to Atlanta A2A 2007

Submitted by jmdill on October 16, 2007 - 10:57am.

[Editor's note: I posted this for Jim after he sent the info at my request. I wanted this story to be in the 2007 A2A Journals collection we are building!]

After the Athens to Atlanta skate this year, the Herbsts, a couple who skated the 52 mile distance wanted to know more about the granddad-grandson team who skated the full 87 mile distance.  Here's what I wrote.  My wife and daughter-in-law took pictures at the rest stops and at the finish.   I've included those also.

Athens to Atlanta Roadskate A2A 2007 Inline Skate Report (Saturday)

Saturday broke late and fuzzy, thank goodness, and it was likely eleven a.m. before verticalizing. I went to the computer for some reason and eebee helped a great deal with finding a place to get the window fixed. We decided we'd be too nervous to leave the car unrepaired at the hotel and in the city garage, as we'd need to leave some little something most likely no matter how we tried to plan.

If you get a few minutes, please take a look at some bicycling, touring and vintage bike photos of Italy from Dale Brown at Cycles de Oro. There are lots of nice photos of the buildings, streets, people, and of course, classic bikes of Italy! Thanks for sharing, Dale! You're making us really jealous of your time in Italia. I just wish I could hear the narration that goes with this slideshow, because I know Dale has tons of great stories.

After Rolling in Randolph's 50 very hilly miles, I knew I had better get some last minute work in on my skate boots (more on this later). After some smoothing with stone grinding bits, I used marine epoxy and black silicone to do the best I could to put my old Verduccis back in shape...a reasonably smooth footbed shape, that is. Once I finshed that, or thought I had, I set my mind to another obsession...decorating my skate frames.

The Athens to Atlanta Roadskate took place on October 7, 2007, and it was a warm day especially for those not in the lead group. Temperatures in the upper 60s even an hour and a half into the event quickly rose from 70 at 9 am to 80 in ATL by 1 pm, five and a half hours along. For those finishing later, temps rose to 82 and stayed there until all finishers were through.

What a great place for a finish line! With Berlin's Brandenburg Gate in the background, I'm assuming they're on Unter den Linden. Last time I was on that street there was a big, ugly wall cutting it in half - profanely colorful on one side (West) and stiflingly bland on the other (East). Good to see a previously fractured site now the setting for joyous play...or is it fierce battle? :-)
